My Services

Contact me to discuss the needs, pricing, and timeline for your project. It is my pleasure to be of service! Feel free to view my blog for writing samples.

  • Ghost Writing/Content Writing

No matter where you are in the writing process — whether you have a complete manuscript that needs a nudge in the right direction, or if you have a ton of great ideas but require structure to begin writing — you want a ghostwriter who will set aside time to understand your work on an intimate level.

I provide regular video conference calls to discuss the themes, intentions, and overall purpose of your project so that WE can create a manuscript that most authentically illustrates your vision. I will read any supplementary materials that you provide as well as conduct my own research as necessary. You are looking for a writer who will treat your project as if it were his own. If you do not have an outline, we can create it together.

  • Translation/Captioning (Spanish & Portuguese to English)

Modern translations must be fueled from a place of curiosity, not assumption. As I work through your project, I will conduct research and fact-checking to ensure the original heart of your work is preserved. I also offer video calls to ensure I understand your intent.

So many translations come out sounding rigid, favoring word-for-word translation while losing sight of cultural nuances and the subtleties of your unique voice. Likewise, automated translation is limited to surface-level information and may alienate persons with disabilities. You need an up-to-date translator who is experienced in analyzing and discussing media in its original language then transposing it to the target language.

  • Editing

It is essential that multiple sets of trained eyes look over any project before publication. No single person can catch it all. However, a keen editor is skilled at finding mistakes and unearthing hidden opportunities in an already rich manuscript. With a sharp attention to detail, I provide restructuring, revision, and proofreading.

The right structural edits help you to present your audience with the most coherent version of your story. Send me your project, and I will give my opinion on what it may need moving forward. Let me look after your writing!

My genres include but are not limited to:

Fiction: magical realism; adventure; fantasy; young adult; literary fiction.

Nonfiction: literature/film/game analysis; memoir/autobiography; language learning; self-improvement; travel; documentary; educational.

Testimonials

  • Dr. John H. Carter - Author of Hold My Mule

“While editing the manuscript for my autobiography, Hold My Mule: There is no such word as Can’t, Mr. Houser’s insight was critical to bringing clarity to my story. With a fifty-year age difference, he assisted me in explaining terminology and situations that were seemingly clear in the 1950s but are a foreign language in today’s vernacular. I am indebted to this young man for his attention to detail and ability to get an old man to think and write in 21st-century terms.

His meticulous editing and proofreading showed me the importance of having a skilled editor to look over one’s work. His unrelenting questions and feedback served invaluable as they pushed me to write more where necessary and to cut parts that did not serve my vision. He showed genuine care for my story like it was his own and was certain not to move on until we agreed my ideas were well reflected on the page. Benjamin is a passionate professional whom I have no doubt will continue to perform high quality work for years to come.”

  • Dr. Kércia Rocha Andrade - Ph.D in Social Work

“During my doctoral exchange program in the city of Athens Georgia, I had the opportunity to meet Benjamin Houser at the University of Georgia. As a student volunteer, he helped me gain a better command of the English language through weekly conversation, reading suggestions, and the encouragement to write. At the time, I already recognized his professionalism and competency for teaching English, learning Portuguese, and especially the translation of both languages.

Upon completing my doctorate in Brazil, in the year 2020, I requested Benjamin’s services to translate the abstract of my dissertation on social work from Portuguese to English. Even though he is not trained in my area, his translation was excellent. It was incredible to witness his thoughtfulness to understand and respect the meaning of the technical terms in my dissertation.

In conclusion, it is for the above reasons that I would certainly recommend Benjamin Houser’s services as translator, writer, and editor.”

  • Katrina M. Walker - High school teacher

“I enthusiastically recommend Ben Houser’s work. In 2021 he did the subtitles for the 1996 Argentine film Eva Perón: La Verdadera Historia. It was a film I wanted to pair with my teaching of the 1996 Hollywood movie Evita. There were no English language versions of the Argentine film available so I reached out to Ben to see if he could do the subtitling work. Since he had a background in Comparative Literature and Intercultural Studies, I felt that he could communicate the spirit of the language in his translation.

That expectation was more than met. Though he was balancing a number of other projects, he completed the subtitling work in a timely fashion and at a reasonable price. He provided a DVD and cloud-based version of the work. He was very responsive throughout the process and answered questions months after the project was finished. When I used the film in class, some of my students who are more versed in Spanish noted some subtleties in speech use that were nicely captured in the subtitles. All in all, I had an excellent experience working with Ben Houser, and I highly recommend him.”

“While interning with Latin American News Digest, Benjamin Houser skillfully translated and condensed Latin American news articles into our format.

Benjamin’s writing was consistently clear, concise, and correct. His understanding of the news articles in Portuguese and Spanish was thorough and his summaries in English carefully reflected the main points of the articles, as well as the perspective and intent of the journalist. Benjamin’s writing skills in English and his reading skills in Portuguese and Spanish are superb.”

The Latin American News Digest is a weekly publication dedicated to expanding the reach of Latin American media by featuring translated summaries of articles originating from Central and South American news sources. Their translators are all college students. In the final semester of my undergrad, I translated both Spanish and Portuguese articles to English for the Digest. This experience was the final push I needed to write content on a regular basis. I’ll never forget it. I would recommend this to any college student looking for an internship in translation.
